SUMMARY:Monthly Outing - "Indoor Outing" Social Event
DESCRIPTION:We will be having a social club meeting on March 28th at South Bay Fire Station 8-1\, which is not our usual meeting place. See the map below.\nWe will have food\, entomology training\, casting practice\, and fly tying. \nIt’s a potluck and fun day. Inside. We’ll set up the room at 9:00 AM. Bring whatever pot-luck item you’d like.\nMax and Diane Doerge will bring their delicious gumbo. They really know what they’re doing !\nWe didn’t organize sign-ups for types of food…. But these things always work out. Contribute as you like. \nA head-count will really help our planning. Let me know if you plan to attend? If you didn’t think you could come\, and your plans change and on Saturday you’re available? COME ANYWAY. \nTraining: 10 am – 12pm. Wayne Dixon will again present Entomology. Several students missed this on March 2. This is your make-up session.\nIf people want to review some knots we taught\, or if you missed them\, we can work on those.\nLunch probably about noon – ish. \nCasting: If weather holds… This will be our first meeting at this Fire Department\, so we don’t have experience with casting here. We will assess that as we go. We will have spare rods if you don’t have one yet.\nIf you have a rod\, bring it. But don’t buy anything until you talk to us. \nFly Tying – if you ever wondered about tying\, now’s your chance. We have spare equipment\, tools\, and materials to help you tie your first fly. You may surprise yourself !

SUMMARY:Monthly Outing - Change to Burfoot Park!
DESCRIPTION:Based on some early scouting reports on the Toutle River\, we have decided to go after SeaRun Cutthroat in the Sound out of Burfoot Park. High tide on Saturday should be close to 8 AM and Low tide close to 2:40 PM. Check back for further details\, but the leaders will get there between 8:30 and 9 AM. Hot soup will be available to share. We will probably meet up afterwards at the Boston Harbor Marina cafe to share a hot beverage and tales of the day.\nThis outing will require grit and determination most of us haven’t accessed in decades. But with enough layers\, hot breakfast\nand steady egos we will enjoy ourselves. The camaraderie and nature is what we’re all really here for.

SUMMARY:Fly Tying Social
DESCRIPTION:We’re starting a monthly fly tying social at River’s Edge Restaurant at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course the 4th Tuesday of the month. Our first get together will be Tuesday January 27th starting at 6pm. Please be respectful of employees and other diners and be sure to “leave no trace” of hooks\, wire\, or other materials that could cause harm or damage to equipment. \nIf you’re working on a specific pattern\, please reach out to me ahead of time and I can have tools\, materials\, and myself or another experienced tier available to help coach or demonstrate. \nThank you and I hope to see you next Tuesday. \nSouth Sound Fly Fishers\nVice President\nChris Tilton

SUMMARY:Monthly Outing - Munn Lake
DESCRIPTION:Our outing this month will be attended by our local Project healing Waters chapter. We will have shelter from the rain\, breakfast burritos\, and hot coffee for everyone. If you have a water craft of any non-motorized sort bring it along. Everything from inner tubes to drift boats will work just fine. \nParking at Munn is pretty limited. If carpooling is an option I recommend it. If there is no parking left\, consider working up a shuttle between Pioneer Park and Munn Lake. There is lots of parking at Pioneer Park and it is only 1 mile away. And don’t forget your Discover Pass and or DFW Pass

SUMMARY:Monthly Outing - Wynoochee River Outing
DESCRIPTION:Our new location will be Twin Bridges Park near Montesano on the mighty Wynoochee River. Along the Wynoochee we located several excellent spots where parking and river access was easy and available. As the Wynoochee is tidally affected we do get to sleep in a little this Saturday. Low tide is 9:38. The best time to start working the river is as the tide comes in. So I will be posted up at 9:30 to meet and greet everyone as you all arrive. From there we can start fishing and moving to the other scouted bank locations if need be.\nWhen: Meet at 10:00\nWhere: Twin Bridges County Park at 29 County Farm Rd\, Montesano\, WA 98563\nWhat: We will be walk and wading\, fishing on the incoming tide for Coho Salmon. There is really good bank access at the county park with knee high slow-moving water and deeper holes using a 25 to 30 ft cast. We will go out to lunch afterwards. \nSpecial note: You need a salmon and steelhead catch card if you plan on retaining any fish \nRod: 7 or 8 wt\nLine: Floating\, intermediate\, or sink tip depending on technique\nRecommended fly patterns:\nBeads or egg patterns\nEgg-Sucking Leeches: These are classic and highly effective for coho. Variations tied with marabou or rabbit strip in black and purple\, with a pink or orange head\, are a top choice.\nBunny Leeches: Similar to the Egg-Sucking Leech\, these have an enticing\, pulsating action. Bright colors like cerise and purple are favorites.\nClouser Minnows: A versatile baitfish pattern. Pink/white\, chartreuse/white\, and chartreuse/pink are the most effective color combinations for coho.\nDolly Llama: This articulated streamer is popular in a pink/purple color scheme.\nContact our Outings Chair Jesse for any questions: 253-432-0659 \nAdditional info:\nMultiple species were seen coming in last week. Everyone I talked to was hauling them in on egg patterns. I suggest the fluorescent\, neon\, sometimes referred to as cheating pattern flies. The brighter and more alien looking the better. Glo bugs\, blood dots\, meth eggs\, slush eggs\, the more industriall and toxic looking the better. These fish are all hopped up on the spawn\, in stressed water and eating to attack as much as they are to feed. That all being said\, the usual patterns can still be applied. Anything bright and flashy should be just fine. The chartreuse\, pink\, jointed and articulated monstrosities your non fishing friends are sure of is a sign of decline. Due to their absolute lack of representing anything in nature. Those flies are the ones you want to bring. \nLow tide is at 3:00 pm and the fishing is going to slack out way before that. So it will be up to the river and fish to decide when we’re done. If everybody is up for it\, I suggest that when we’re finished descending upon the great Wynoochee salmon run. We meet at the nearby ShipWreck cafe. I’ve had several meals there in the last few weeks. It’s a great place to get warm and lie to the waitresses about all the fish you caught. They’ve gotten the hang of smiling and nodding in agreement that my scraped knuckles\, bruised forehead and muddy state of near hypothermia is from some great adventure. And not slipping in the parking lot and splashing hot coffee down my face and waders. \nEasiest way to find Twin Bridges Park is using whichever map app you like the best. Plug in Twin Bridges Park\, Montesano and it will come right up. I will be in the main parking lot. I drive an older silver Tundra. It has four doors\, a beat up topper and is covered in ‘look at me\, I fly fish’ stickers. If you don’t see it right away just look for the white SSFF cheese board signs and follow the arrows. I’ll have them posted at the main road\, parking lot entrance and one last one by the meeting area. If anyone has any extra stickers laying around I’ll take them. I love stickers. \nCan’t wait to see you all tomorrow\, I’ll be sending out a text this afternoon to everyone who signed up so be looking out for that. Its just a final check in before tomorrow. \nJesse

DESCRIPTION:There will be a pop-up outing to walk and wade the Wynoochee and Satsop Rivers. We will be swinging flies for coho salmon. 7 or 8 wt rod is recommended with intermediate or sink tip line and your favorite streamers. Both river levels are pretty low with good bank access. \nJesse and I will be meeting at Shipwreck Cafe for breakfast at 8:30 and then carpool as needed to the rivers. We plan to be done by 1:00 and have plenty of room for others to ride along. We also have extra rods if you don’t have a salmon rod. SUMMARY:Monthly Outing Coldwater Lake (St. Helens)
DESCRIPTION:You must have a pontoon boat or some means of getting on the lake – no fishing is permitted from shore (if you hike the lake\, you are restricted to “stay on the trail” and there are only two access points to the shoreline where boats may land). The usual flies will work\, such as buggers\, leeches\, nymphs or a fly that floats well. Some days nothing works. You ought to bring both floating and deep sinking lines. \nDriving Directions: Access off I-5 via SR 504\, Exit No.49; go east on\nthe well maintained state road.\nColdwater Lake is 45 miles from I-5. You will pass Seaquest State Park\nat 5.2 miles\, Toutle at 11\, Kid Valley at 18.3 (last place for gas)\, Eco\nPark at mile-post 24.1\, and finally Coldwater at milepost 45.\nOr you can go through Toledo until that road makes a T intersection with SR 504.\n – Gasoline powered motors are prohibited – it is part of Mount Saint Helens Monument\n – Federal pass required (America the Beautiful pass)\n – Boat ramp is gravel (Not concrete)\n – Can be windy\, 5+ mpg most of the day. Winds are usually blowing up the mountain in the morning\, and down the mountain in the afternoon \nIt takes about two hours of driving to get there and I recommend getting there around 9 am particularly if you plan to fish chironomids. Some club members will be arriving between 9 AM and 10 AM at the launch\, which is at the SW end of the Lake\, which is NE of Spirit Lake Highway/504.\nColdwater Lake is managed as a quality trout fishery. Wild rainbow and cutthroat are in the lake. Access is limited. Contact National Volcanic Monument Headquarters at 360-449-7800 for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Lake Lawrence Public Boat Launch\, 17500 Pleasant Beach Dr SE\, Yelm\, Wa 98597\nFlies\, Rods\, & Lines: 4wt or 5wt. Bring two if you have them. One for indicator fishing and one with sinking line for streamers or leeches. This lake is a 2 Pole allowed lake. Tapered leader is not necessary if you want to go straight to tippet.\nChironomid flies in olive\, brown\, red\, black in sizes 14 and 16. Smaller balanced leeches in size 6\, 8 in olive\, black\, black/red\, brown. Scuds and backswimmers/water boatmen might be good flies too. SUMMARY:Monthly Outing - Kokanee Lake aka Lower Lake Cushman (Mason County)
DESCRIPTION:Kokanee Lake aka Lower Lake Cushman (Mason County)\nTargeting Rainbow Trout\, Bull Trout & Kokanee.\nMeet in the Public Boat Launch at 9:00 AM\nEquipment: Boat\, pontoon or float tube\, trolling motor.\nFlies: With sinking line – skull cap bunny tail stinger pattern that resembles a sculpin.\nWith floating line – a stimulator pattern.\nI have only fished Kokanee Lake once\, which was last summer with Kevin Angevine. We tried trolling a variety of wooly buggers and leeches without much success. After a couple hours we found something that worked\, a skull cap bunny tail stinger pattern that resembles a sculpin\, a fly Kevin got from Bjorn at The Fly Fisher. We had about 1-1/2 hours with fish every few minutes trolling full sinking lines. At last month’s meeting Kevin mentioned using a stimulator pattern on a floating line that the fish were hitting on the retrieve when fly was below the surface.

SUMMARY:Update! Monthly Outing - Grant County\, WA
DESCRIPTION:Updated 5/16/2024\nDue to 30 MPH sustained high winds\, we are having to change the location of our Eastern WA outing this weekend to something a little closer. We will be camping at a private campground in Onalaska\, Washington. We will head to Lost Creek Fly Shop tomorrow (Friday) at 4:30 PM. The owner Mike is putting together some of the most effective flies for us to use at Carlisle Lake and for the Cowlitz River on Saturday. The local high school helps raise trout all year long\, and 5-6 lb Rainbows are not uncommon at Carlisle Lake. I caught 13 smaller trout there last week within 2 hours. This lake is an electric motors only\, but also great for pontoons or other floats. We will be at Carlisle Lake from 5-7:30 PM or later if the fishing is good. \nSaturday morning we will launch at the Barrier Dam boat launch on the Cowlitz River at 9:00 a.m.\, we have a shuttle set up for our take out at Blue Creek. This is almost an 8 Mile float that takes a good portion of the day. The river is running at 5100 CFS\, with 11ft visibility. Rainbows\, Cuttys\, Steelhead\, and Chinooks are all in the river right now. We still have a seat open in one of the boats. \nOur club is providing a Chicken Enchilada dinner Saturday evening around 6:30PM (currently we have 12 who will be there). Phil is bringing some home made salsa and his secret recipe of Mexican beans. Saturday evening after dinner we will either go back to Carlisle Lake or up to Mayfield Lake for a evening /sunset fish. Same locations for Sunday morning. \nSince we are staying within 45 minutes from Olympia\, if you wish to join us for any of the fishing activities\, camping\, or just for dinner on Saturday\, please text me so I can give you directions to the camp. \nLost Creek Fly Shop Address:\n2069 WA-508\nOnalaska\, WA 98570 \nCarlisle Lake Address:\n426 Alexander Road\,\nOnalaska\, WA 98570 \nBarrier Dam Boat Launch:\n2162 Spencer Rd #2240\nSalkum\, WA 98582\n(Launch is past the salmon hatchery) \nA BIG shout out to Max and Doug who drove 430 miles\, only to find out that white caps were flooding the boat launch at Quincy Lake… And yet\, Max still caught two 14″ trout! \nThanks\, \nJared Wood\nSSFF President

SUMMARY:Monthly Weekend Outing - Spencer Lake
DESCRIPTION:April 18 and 20 – Spencer Lake (Mason County) – rainbow\, cutthroat\, bass\, blue gill.\nMeeting for Breakfast – 8:00 AM Spencer Lake Bar & Grill\, 1180 E. Pickering Road\nFlies: Wooly buggers\, leeches\, chironomids\nLines: Full sinking and intermediate lines for trolling deeper parts of lake. Floating line might be effective for recent plants and in the shallows or if you see some surface action.\nMotors: Gas motors are allowed.\nI have only fished Spencer a few times and don’t claim to know it well. I bring several rods with floating\, intermediate\, and full sinking lines\, and I change them depending on depth of water and how I am fishing. When using an electric trolling motor we have done best using a full sinking line. The area straight out and to the right of the launch is shallow and mostly targeted by bass anglers but is worth giving a shot for trout\, too.
