DESCRIPTION:Our speaker this month will be Daniel Spencer.\nDan Spencer is the Information and Education Specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Puget Sound/Olympic Peninsula Fisheries Complex. This complex includes a field research facility in Lacey and three National Fish Hatcheries on the Olympic Peninsula (Makah\, Quilcene\, and Quinault). Dan runs a diversity of programs\, including aquatic invasive species\noutreach and angler promotion and education work. \nDan will be providing a two-part presentation for the September meeting. He’ll start with an overview of USFWS fisheries conservation efforts in Western Washington. The second half will focus on fly fishing opportunities in Alaska\, with an emphasis on popular watersheds and possible DIY trips. \nDoors open at 6:30PM

DESCRIPTION:We will be setting up our casting lanes and having practice (or friendly competition) for anyone wanting to work on their casting skills. At the request of some of our members\, we will also have a few variations of float tubes set up so you can look at the different styles and functionality to see what suits you best if you are in the market to purchase one. \nOur Speaker will be Michael Maltby. Mike worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service before deciding to become a lawyer.\nMike has always loved to fish and started fly fishing 30 years ago while working and living in Coeur d’ Alene\, Idaho. Mike has built his own fishing rods for over 45 years and has amassed quite a collection of fly rods. Moreover\, he has tied his own flies for 30 years. Mike recently returned from an epic trip to New Zealand’s North Island and looks forward to sharing some of the knowledge he has acquired\, the people he met\, and oh yeah\, a few fish that were caught!

He works with board members and partner Organizations such as the Green River Valley Alliance and AFFTA\, to help coordinate and further the efforts to advocate for wild fish and the habitat they depend on.\nA resident of the Pacific Northwest since 2001\, David grew up snowboarding and fishing in the mountains of Idaho\, Montana\,and Colorado.\nWhen not swinging flies around the west\, he can usually be found prowling the beaches of the South Sound in search of sea run cutthroat. His writing on steelhead has appeared in The Drake magazine as well as Swing the Fly.

DESCRIPTION:Bring a fly rod to the meeting and join us for some casting lessons\, practice\, games\, and encouragement. We will use the area behind the fire station for casting. Like last month\, we will have a mini BBQ starting at 5:30 for anybody who wishes to converse and enjoy some exaggerated fishing stories of other club members (feel free to make up your own). We will meet inside the fire station at 7PM for a brief club meeting and then go back out to the casting area.

After graduating from high school in Olympia\, Washington\, Josh received an athletic\nscholarship to play soccer at Gonzaga University.\nAfter four years and graduating with a degree in Business Administration\, Josh landed his dream job as a professional soccer player. While playing in 2017 Josh put a team together and launched a company in the fly fishing industry that you know today as Spawn Fly Fish. With a foundation built on the same roots as his soccer experience\, Josh knew he could lead a team\, company\, and community to success. DESCRIPTION:Our speaker this month will be Tom Harwood. Tom has been collecting antique fishing tackle for more than 30 years. He is a Life Member and has been the national president of the Old Reel Collectors Association\, ORCA. Tom hosted the ORCA national convention 15 years ago. He is also a Life Member and past regional vice president of NFLCC (National Fishing Lure Collectors Club) and has hosted multiple regional conventions.\nTom’s presentation will cover historical\, economic\, and technological influences that lead to the sport fishing we do today. His presentation will focus on fly fishing related items\, but will also touch on bait casting to trolling for salmon. Come to the meeting\, I think you will find this a most interesting presentation.

He enjoys helping the Washington chapter of Fly Fishers International and helps keep it the lively\nand successful group members expect. Steve manages to visit every fly fishing club in the Washington Council to help inform\neach group about FFI programs.\nAt our April meeting Steve will be speaking about the new Skills Development program the FFI has created. This program can be utilized with individuals or groups. It is easy to set up and implement. Becoming better at casting makes fly fishing more enjoyable and leads to more successful outings. You will enjoy Steve’s presentation and his passion for teaching.

She will deliver a presentation on Sea Run Cutthroat fishing in the Puget Sound\, and talk about activities in the Chehalis Basin that our local Trout Unlimited chapter is doing.  \nJ. Michelle Swope has been fishing since she can remember\, and started fly fishing at 7 years old. An experienced angler\, she grew up fishing for Steelhead on the Olympic Peninsula. This soon morphed into fishing for other species\, including tuna and dorado off of Baja\, bonefish and sailfish in the Yucatán\, and sea-run cutthroat in her backyard of South Puget Sound. She has over 25 years guiding experience and will fish for anything\, with anything.

SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting- Speaker Skip Morris on Fly Tying
DESCRIPTION:Skip’s presentation is “Make Dry Fly and Emerger Fishing Work.” This presentation covers dry flies of all kinds and floating to half-floating emerger-flies. Beginners and seasoned fly fishers alike will find plenty of interest here: when to and when not to fish an attractor (along with a look at some excellent attractor dry flies)\, casts for achieving a drag-free fly drift\, how to sink tippet to turn it almost invisible\, dry flies on creeks vs. dry flies on rivers\, when to twitch a dry fly\, a close look at various dry-fly designs and how each is designed to be fished\, considerations for choosing the right fly to imitate various insects\, and so on\, and so on..  Skip will also demonstrate some fly tying of his favorite patterns. \n The doors (zoom or in-person) will open at 6:30pm.  The meeting will start at 7:00pm and the evening’s program will promptly start at 7:15pm.  Any unfinished club business will be concluded after the presentation.\nDirections to the North Olympia Fire Department Fire Department:\nFrom the north – Use I-5 south exit 105 and stay right toward the Port of Olympia. Follow the main road as it changes its name to East Bay Drive and then Boston Harbor Road. About 4 miles north of the State Ave signal is the Shell gas station; you’ll find the Fire Department just past Shell on the right side.\nFrom the south – Use I-5 north exit 105 and follow the signs to the Port of Olympia. Go right (north) at the round-a-bout\, then left at the Plum Street signal. Continue up Plum as it changes its name to East Bay Drive and then Boston Harbor Road. About 4 miles north of the State Ave signal is the Shell gas station; you’ll find the Fire Department just past Shell on the right side. the fire station is on the left.\nFire Department Parking – Do NOT park in front of their doors. If the front lot is full turn right onto Boston Harbor Road. Turn right into the dark driveway\, and continue to the back of the fire department\, to more parking.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s picnic will again be at Scott Lake.  With the return to more normal events the club will be providing hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone. Members are asked to bring a side dish or a dessert along with the beverage of their choice. Be sure to bring chairs to relax in and a fly rod. We will have casting games and contests for distance and accuracy.\nThis is a family event so bring your spouse\, kids\, best friend\, or live-in guests. We will have a social hour from 5:00 – 6:00\, and the burgers and hotdogs will be ready by 6:00 pm. So come on out enjoy a cold drink and the good company of all of the South Sound Fly Fishers family. I hope to see everyone at the Scott Lake Community Park on Tuesday\, August 15. \nHere are the directions to Scott Lake:\nTake 93rd Ave SW from either I-5 or Old Hwy 99. Our speaker\, WDFW Coastal (Region 6) Fish Program Manager James Losee\, will be talking about Puget Sound’s coastal cutthroat trout. James received his BS from Western Washington University in 2005\, and received his MS from Oregon State University in 2012. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.\nPrior to becoming the Coastal Fish Program Manager\, James began his career with WDFW as the area fish biologist for Thurston County and then became the District Fish Biologist for east Kitsap\, Pierce and Thurston Counties
