SUMMARY:Monthly Club Meeting- Speaker Skip Morris on Fly Tying
DESCRIPTION:Skip’s presentation is “Make Dry Fly and Emerger Fishing Work.” This presentation covers dry flies of all kinds and floating to half-floating emerger-flies. Beginners and seasoned fly fishers alike will find plenty of interest here: when to and when not to fish an attractor (along with a look at some excellent attractor dry flies)\, casts for achieving a drag-free fly drift\, how to sink tippet to turn it almost invisible\, dry flies on creeks vs. dry flies on rivers\, when to twitch a dry fly\, a close look at various dry-fly designs and how each is designed to be fished\, considerations for choosing the right fly to imitate various insects\, and so on\, and so on.. Skip will also demonstrate some fly tying of his favorite patterns. \n The doors (zoom or in-person) will open at 6:30pm. The meeting will start at 7:00pm and the evening’s program will promptly start at 7:15pm. SUMMARY:Monthly Club Outing
DESCRIPTION:This month we are going to target trout in the Dosewallips.\nOriginally\, we discussed fishing for pink or humpback salmon.\nNote that the Dosewallips is currently closed to all salmon fishing until November 1.\nIt is expressly illegal to target pink salmon in that river at this time.\nMeet: We will depart Haagen’s parking lot at Cooper Point Rd. and Black Lake Blvd. at 6:00 am if you want to carpool. Or meet at Dosewallips State Park 8:00 am.\nTrout fishing is open. There are plenty of places to pull over and park along the Dosewallips River road on the north side of the river off Highway 101. If you have the time\, take the short hike to Rocky Brook Falls\, reportedly a nice waterfall.\nHere’s some info on pink salmon which may benefit you later when you legally fish for them.\nYou may fish for them in the salt at this time. And they are at the Hoodsport hatchery in some numbers\, but our outing is the Dosewallips for trout.\n“Pinks” are commonly called humpies\, due to the prominent hump the males develop when spawning. Our apologies. Their scientific species name is Oncorhynchus gorbuscha\, based on the Russian word gorbusa which literally means humpie. Pink salmon are the smallest and most numerous of the salmon species. In Puget Sound humpies return in good numbers\nduring odd numbered years. They can be readily caught on a fly in saltwater\, and when spawning in rivers. Typically\, anything pink works\, though I have a friend who hammers them with white jigs in the Snohomish River. Though the smallest of the salmon species\, they put up a good fight when caught on a fly rod. If you are going to retain a fish or two for the BBQ\nor smoker\, you need to bleed them and put them on ice as soon as possible or the meat will be soft and mushy.\nFlies: Usual cutthroat trout patterns about size 16: Egg pattern\, stonefly nymph\, San Juan worm\, and dries like elk hair caddis\, mayflies…\nLines: Floating (this is mostly shallow water). May want to bring a sink tip/indicator for deeper holes.\nDirections: Highway 101 to Dosewallips State Park near Brinnon

SUMMARY:Monthly Outing - Deep Lake Millersylvania State Park
DESCRIPTION:We will head out to Deep Lake\, which is located in Millersylvania State Park in Thurston County. June is a good time for Bluegill\, Bass\, and Rainbow trout.\nThere is some room on a pier\, but a water craft is recommended. Be aware that the launch area is very shallow. Float tubes\, inflatable craft\, and kayaks are the easiest to use. Large boats will have difficulty.\nYou cannot launch boats from a trailer here\, but there is good access for car toppers\, float tubes\, and pontoons. There is a fishing dock and good access for bank fishing throughout the park. It could be crowded on the weekend. I fished it in on a weekday in early June.\nRainbow were not being cooperative\, but I had fun catching lots of bluegill\, sunfish and small bass.\nFlies: chironomids\, wooly buggers\, leeches\, damsel flies\, soft hackles\nLines: floating\, intermediate\, or full sink depending on style of fishing.\nRecent Plants:\n• April 12 – May 23 – 3 plants totaling ~ 11\,000 (1/4 lb.)
